What is a Sorting Code?

Sort code is the domestic bank codes used to route money transfers between banks in the UK, and in the Republic of Ireland. The format of the sorting code is three pairs of numbers like 12-34-56 which identifies both the bank and the branch where the account is held. Sort codes are encoded into IBANs but are not encoded into BICs.
